Training Programs - Mountain Experience Flying

The Mountain Experience flight allows a pilot to gain experience and knowledge when flying in and around mountainous terrain. This is an invaluable lesson for pilots wishing to experience the interior of British Columbia's landscape.

Training Overview

The Mountain Experience flight will take the student through two legs of training. The first leg will be an over the top' leg which will assist the pilot in learning to recognise landmarks from high altitude in order to maintain a pre-planned track. This leg will also help the pilot to recognise possible weather related hazards related to mountain flying.

The second leg will be a low level flight. The goal during this leg is to become familiar with techniques used to increase visibility within narrow and winding terrain. Other lessons will include minimum radius turns and low level navigation.

The routing for the flight will be:

First Leg: Langley (CYNJ) direct Pemberton (CYPS)

Second Leg: Pemberton (CYPS) - Langley (CYNJ) via Lillooet River and Sloquet Creek

Experience

As this flight is intended to enhance the private pilot's understanding and skills in mountainous terrain, it is expected that the candidate will have attained a minimum of a Private Pilot Licence.

Items required for the flight will be:

  • Mountain flying emergency bag (available from SkyQuest)
  • Appropriate clothing for a mountainous environment (jacket, warm clothing, appropriate footwear)
  • Current VNC and VTA
